St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco, CA was founded in 1857 and run by the Sisters of Mercy, Burlingame Community. Today it is the oldest operating hospital in the city. The Sisters initially began their hospital service to meet unmet local needs; the California Legislature refused any responsibility for caring for the sick during a cholera epidemic in 1855.
