Title: Patients at St. Mary’s Hospital
Date: 1911
Creator: unknown
Description: This photograph is from St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco in 1911. It shows a patient room and a sister nurse. St. Mary’s was established in 1857 and run by the Sisters of Mercy, Burlingame Community. Today it is the oldest operating hospital in the city. The Sisters initally began their hospital service to meet unmet needs; the California Legislature refused any responsibility for caring for the sick during a cholera epidemic in 1855.
